Erin's Reading Challenge 7.0- I'm done!

I finished this challenge months ago, it seems, but didn't update. I really enjoyed almost all of theses books, which you probably know if you have been reading and seeing my Show Us Your Books posts.

The Banned Book choice was Faulkner and as a good Southern girl I wanted to love it...but it was terrible.

  •  25 points: The ALA’s “Banned Books Week” occurs while our challenge is happening. Read a book from this list of the most commonly banned books in America (submitted by Christina)
  • 35 points: Read a book a Disney movie was based on OR a book based on a Disney movie (submitted by Kirsten- don’t forget to check that the book is at least 200 pages)

So I guess I technically didn't complete the challenge...but I'm totally done.

If you are doing the challenge, how's it coming along?

Reading Q&A

I'm taking this from Teh Megan, who took it from someone else...blogging is all about connection, right?

If you came up with this & want credit, let me know & I will be happy to link your blog/etc!

How many hours a week do you spend reading?
This really really varies due to about a million factors.
Anywhere from 1-10, let's say. More if an audio-book is involved.

I like Megan's answer:
"I don't count the hours of things I enjoy."

Do you prefer digital or print books?
All of the above.
Nothing is as cozy or relaxing as cuddling up on the couch with a
blanket and a physical book. It's also easier on my eyes.

However, ebooks are so handy!
I can read on my phone at lunch or my iPad
and binge a series super quick through the library.

2 favorite genres?
General Fiction
after that, it's a free-for-all

 2 not-favorite genres?
deep sci-fi (Journey to the Center of the Earth type)
after that, it's more dependent on writing than genre

 Biggest book pet peeve?
super sweet love stories
not necessarily cliches, but just...
when nothing goes wrong or people are "all-in" immediately

 Favorite thing about reading?
the escape it provides- it allows me to "hide" from real life

 Bookish confession?
I used to dog-ear pages constantly.
As I get older I understand why this is so upsetting,
but for years I was guilty as sin.

Erin's Challenge 6.0 Wrap-Up

So the only one I didn't complete was Read a book by your favorite author. Overall, not bad for my first challenge. Especially since I don't necessarily have a favorite author.

I started reading Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams by Sylvia Plath, because The Bell Jar is one of my favorite books. But I just read the "short stories" part of the description, not the "diary excerpts" part. And it was a bit of a struggle to get through the diary excerpts...because they weren't meant to be read. So both mentally and emotionally I was struggling- it made me think of the same issues that came up when I read Go Set a Watchman. There is very questionable morality involved in posthumously printing things, or waiting until someone is mentally weak to "encourage" it. So it got put on pause.

Overall this was an interesting experience. I'm not sure I will repeat it, but I'm not saying I won't either. We'll see what the next categories are and how I feel about them.

Erin's Challenge 6.0- One Month to Go

The challenge ends next month, so figured it was a good time for a monthly check-in. I honestly didn't think I would finish, since my library did not cooperate with some of the books I wanted...and I read a bunch of other stuff that wasn't originally on the list. But some of those ended up fitting well and replacing some original items...so I think I will make it! And I'll end up reading more things off my TBR rather than things I just had decided to add for the challenge, which is cool.

5 points: Freebie – Read a book that is at least 200 pages.

So, three of these came from The Lunar Chronicles...

How is everyone else doing?

Erin's Challenge 6.0- We're Halfway There...

I did not realize until Megan posted her halfway check-in that we were, well, halfway into this challenge.

  •  5 points: Freebie – Read a book that is at least 200 pages.
    • Cress by Marissa Meyer
      • I started The Lunar Chronicles around November, and can't wait to finish. Plus it lends to the next challenge...
      • Library e-book
  •  10 points: Read a book that starts with the letter “W”.
  • 10 points: Read a book with six words in the title.
  • 15 points: Read a book that has a (mostly) green cover.
  •  20 points: Read a book with a homonym in the title (inspired by the book Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin that I [Erin] read last challenge with a character who is obsessed with homonyms.)
  •  20 points: (Submitted by Linda) Read a book by your favorite author.
    • Naked in Death by J.D. Robb
    • I honestly don't know if I have a specific favorite author, but I've read a ton of Nora Roberts over the years and enjoy the few J.D. Robb books I've read (her thriller/mystery alias), plus I already have this one so...
    • Own physical copy
  • 25 points: (Submitted by Christina) Read a book set in the city/town/state/territory/county/province where you live.
  • 30 points: (Submitted by Peggy) Read a “Rory Gilmore” book. The character of Rory from the Gilmore Girls was shown reading over 300 different books throughout the series. Choose one!
  •  30 points: (Submitted by Stef) Read a book from a genre that you’ve never read (or rarely read.)
  • 35 points: (Submitted by Ferne) Read a book with time travel.
So I am halfway done, which is a good place to be at the halfway mark ;) Considering the fact that I've read multiple other books that just didn't apply to this challenge...I'm happy with my progress so far. I need to get on the hard copy books I have, but I've been in a bit of slump and honestly forgot about those. Whoops.

If you are participating in the challenge, how are you doing? If you're not...have you read any of these or have suggestions for other possibilities?

Erin's 6.0 Reading Challenge- Planned Reads

Erin participates in the Show Us Your Books Link-Up pretty regularly, and I've seen people refer to her book challenges before. Jen, also a SUYB & bloggy friend, created a Goodreads group for the current challenge and invited me, so I decided to try it out.

I don't normally do any kind of group reading- challenges, clubs, or read-a-thons. But this is still relatively free form (rules: each book has to be 200+ pages, only 1 reread allowed, and books can only count towards one category). Plus it gives me direction for my TBR list- I think I only added one completely new book.

So after multiple changes, I have only added two books- mainly the Sedaris. I have heard him on This American Life, and my husband has that book so I chose it partly for ease of access but he's not my usual style. I actually heard Frank McCourt speak and read his book Teacher Man, and Angela's Ashes is one of those books I've always thought "Oh yeah I should read that" so it's not a random add. Plus I bought it on Audible and I think my husband will enjoy it also. Everything else is either something already on my TBR, something I own, or a series I had previously started.

One reason I am OK with this challenge is because it doesn't stop me from reading anything specific, and while there are slight additions it mostly just helps me choose an order for my TBR.

Have you read any of these books, or participated in any challenges?
